Dental Bonding

What is Dental Bonding?

Tooth or Dental Bonding is a dental treatment which involves the use and application of a specialized tooth-colored resin on to the teeth in order to conceal small flaws and imperfections. This is a procedure which offers the patient both cosmetic as well as restorative benefits. Unlike other alternative cosmetic procedures such as porcelain veneers or dental crowns, which are manufactured in a dental lab and require multiple visits by a patient, dental bonding can be done by the dental experts at Dentist @ Oakville, chairside, in one single visit.

Uses

As Dental Bonding is amongst the easiest, non-invasive, least expensive of cosmetic dental procedures, it is used quite often by dentists to correct minor cosmetic defects to improve the overall dental appearance of a patient and give them the perfect smile they’ve always wanted.

Here are some of the common conditions in which Dental Bonding may be considered as a treatment of choice:

  • To Repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • To Restore decayed teeth
  • n correction of tooth shape and size
  • Close unwanted spaces or gaps between teeth
  • In order to make teeth appear longer
  • Improve appearance of discolored or stained teeth
  • Correct tooth alignments
  • For further cosmetic enhancements after orthodontic treatments
  • Repair tooth fractures due to bruxism, facial injury or chewing on hard objects
  • To protect the exposed root of teeth due to gum recession

Process and Procedure of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a popular choice for treatment because it provides successful attachment between the tooth’s original surface and the filling material.

The dental bonding process itself is minimally invasive and requires little preparation. After an initial consultation and thorough examination of a patient’s needs, the cosmetic dentist determines if dental bonding is the optimal treatment option for them. Once begun, the procedure itself is relatively simple and quick. Anesthesia is often not a necessity during a dental bonding procedure unless it is used to fill a decayed tooth. We at Dentist @ Oakville use a shade guide to determine and select a composite resin color which closely matches the shade of the patient’s natural tooth. Next, the tooth surface roughened by the application of a mild acid solution to create microscopic pores for better adherence of the bonding material. Following these initial preparatory steps, the dentist applies a small amount of the composite resin on to the patient’s teeth. The dental soldering material is then shaped and contoured for perfectly smoothed surfaces.

Once the layers of bonding resin are shaped, the dentist uses high-intensity light to cure or harden the bonding material. At the end of the appointment, the dentists refine the appearance of the teeth by checking the dental symmetry as well as bite alignment to ensure that the patient is satisfied with the results.

Pros & Cons

As any dental procedure, Dental Bonding is not without its advantages and disadvantages.

Dental Bonding is a cheaper and faster alternative to other cosmetic dental procedures. As compared to veneers or crowns, dental bonding requires the least amount of enamel removal and rarely requires the use of anesthesia.

However, the dental soldering material is not very strong or durable, which means that biting on fingernails or chewing pens will actually damage and chip away at the restoration. Moreover, the dental bonding material is very susceptible to stains and hence requires more than the routine dental hygiene. Coffee, tea, cigarette smoke, or even red wine can permanently stain the dental soldering material hence requiring replacement every 2-3 years.
